THE SCIENCE

Hello Kate Chaney,

As a professional forester and Curtin constituent, I'm hoping you can take some interest in the devastating decision made today by the Victorian State government to ban native forest logging in that State at the end of this year, matching the same awful decision made by the McGowan government on 8 September 2021.

I feel it is time the Federal government showed some leadership and support for one of Australia's few truly sustainable, renewable industries.

We are quick to brag about our country's mineral wealth, which we happily export, but precious few people, including politicians, understand that the small area of our native forests which are set aside for multiple-use, including timber production, can be harvested sustainable ad infinitum. Sustainable harvesting sequesters carbon, does not harm biodiversity, provides local jobs, and provides valuable hardwood products we all use. It is selfish in the extreme to close off our production forests, then import hardwood timbers from overseas where forest management is often questionable.

Below is a media release from my professional body, Forestry Australia. And attached is a media release from the Australian Forest Products Association.

I hope you can understand the despair felt by the forestry profession across the country, and the thousands of businesses and workers affected, and that you can raise this matter with your Federal parliamentary colleagues.

I would also very much appreciate an opportunity to discuss this matter with you at your convenience in Perth in the near future.

Sincerely

John Clarke BSc(For)

Overcoming Challenges in Mass Timber Construction Adoption

The global mass timber market has witnessed significant growth over the past decade – in part due to the EU’s ‘Green Deal’ objectives.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?

To closing down  our sustainable native timber industry while we import more timber and timber products from poorer countries where forest management is nowhere near as good as WA.
